Am I the only one having a hard time watching The Tang Mist? I literally fell asleep while watching the first episode. Then I continued to episode three... and somehow I fell asleep again.
At that point, I started to wonder if the drama was simply not for me because I genuinely struggled to stay engaged.
What I didn't like
One of the first things that threw me off was the editing. Some scenes look like they've been fast-forwarded at 2x speed. When characters are talking, their mouths seem to move much faster than normal. Even when they're walking, it sometimes feels like they're rushing somewhere because someone is chasing them. The whole thing occasionally reminds me of those short-form TikTok dramas rather than a traditional historical mystery series.
As for the story itself, I haven't found much to get excited about so far. The first case didn't create much suspense for me, and I never felt that strong urge to immediately watch the next episode. Normally, a mystery drama should leave me wanting answers, but I didn't get that feeling here.
To be fair, I haven't watched beyond episode five, so I won't go too deep into the story. But after three episodes, I still haven't found a convincing reason to continue. What's surprising is that I'm actually a huge fan of Detective Di Renjie stories.
I've watched several Detective Di movies and dramas over the years, and I'm also a big fan of Strange Tales of Tang Dynasty. So I went into The Tang Mist expecting something I would enjoy. Unfortunately, it just hasn't clicked with me.
Opening Theme and Ending Theme
Another thing that caught me completely off guard was the opening theme song. I don't know if it's just me, but it sounded like background music from a Samsung smartphone commercial.
That being said, I have to give credit where it's due. The opening sequence itself was incredibly creative. The artwork immediately grabbed my attention and was probably one of the most memorable parts of the first episode. Visually, it looked fantastic. I also loved the ending OST.
Conclusion
At the end of the day, The Tang Mist simply isn't my cup of tea. Maybe the story improves later on, and maybe viewers who enjoy slower mystery dramas will have a different experience. But for me, after three episodes, I wasn't invested enough to keep going.
If you've watched The Tang Mist, let me know what you think. Does it get better later, or did you struggle with it too?
